The Pros & Cons of Living in a Log Home

No matter what type of home you live in, there are sure to be pros and cons to living and building that style of home. The same goes for log cabins and log homes, you will find Building and Wooden House Advantages and Disadvantages to both styles of homes.Any home you live in will require a certain amount of maintenance that must be kept up, or you will find your home quickly losing it's curb appeal and liveability. It is always wise to keep a maintenance schedule for all sorts of things from checking the roof, the gutters, the caulking of the countertops, to making sure the chimney is cleaned.

When you live in a log home or log cabin it is no different, you need to on a regular basis check that the logs, the roof, and everything in between. If you have a log cabin or log home that is built right, by a reputable builder, it is less likely to become run down, but that still doesn't' mean you don't have to maintain it, you do. Some people say that some of the disadvantages to living in a log home or log cabin build, are that none of the walls are straight. Whether or not the walls of a log home or log cabin are straight will depend on the type of log cabin or log home build you choose, whether the logs are milled, or hand hewn, and the style of the log home. When it comes to building a log home or log cabin, this is something you will want to discuss with the builder. Log homes are also known to settle over time, and that may require some adjustments. A disadvantage to log homes and log cabins is that they may get expensive to remodel and maintain over time, as the logs have to be resealed every few years. Again with modern technology, and new types of log homes builds, this is something you want to discuss with your builder, and find out exactly what you are getting into. All log cabins are not built the same, the logs used, the type of log home build, the builders, are all factors that will determine your maintenance schedule and expenses.

Any home is going to cost a lot to remodel, so that is hardly an argument against log homes. You also get what you pay for, and plan ahead for. So before building or purchasing your log home or log cabin, you want to consider everything (including your budget), and plan accordingly, and again know what you are getting into. Not to say that unexpected things won't happen, but that is the case no matter where you live. People will also say that log cabins and log homes leak may be too hot, or too cold, that all depends on the log cabins themselves. If you are purchasing an older rustic log cabin, you may be looking at quite a bit of money to properly seal it, and make it the efficient home that you would want to live in, but it is sure to be worth it in the end.

The advantages to living in a log home or log cabin, are many. Log cabins and log homes, if properly built will last for a long time if properly cared for, like anything you have to take care of them, and maintain them. PUrchasig and owning a log home or log cabin with any history is a way to live in a home that ties you to the history, and character of the area to which they are built, and you can't always get that in a home. Owning a home with a story to tell, is compelling in itself. When it comes to owning a log home, you have to outweigh the advantages to the disadvantages, and see if it is the right fit for you.
