A home is not only about its style and design, but also the location it is built on, whether a place is surrounded by trees, the ocean, forest, an island, mountains, a lake, the country, will all leave some sort of impression on the place, and most often aid in the design and inspiration. This "ORCAS ISLAND CABIN," is a gem, in one of the most beautiful areas in the country.

This Orcas Island cabin, built on a sunny bluff in Washington's San juan Islands, is surrounded by beautiful madrone trees and towering cedars, with the ocean close by. David Vandervort Architects designed this lovely cabin, with refined finishes and millwork throughout, at 350 square feet for the lower living area, and 150 square foot sleeping loft upstairs. The gable roof with lean to extensions on either side, the design of the cabin is in a cross shaped floor plan, with the outside corner notches being used as a covered entry porch, firewood storage, and small covered sitting areas. The lower level has the kitchen, dining nook and bathroom in their own alcoves, with a ladder leading up to the loft bedroom, with exposed beams, and french doors downstairs. This cabin is a must see, and there are lots of photos on site.

It goes to show you don't need a lot of space, to make a place work, in total this little cabin has 500 square feet, which is big to some standards, but perfect for a weekend retreat or full time home, and again when you live in such a beautiful place such as the San Juan Islands, you'll never want to leave, the climate is similar to that of the Mediterranean and the views are spectacular.
